Ministry Overview
The St. John the Baptist conference of St. Vincent de Paul was started by Clint and Judy Peterson in 1991 to assist neighbors who could use support meeting their basic needs. This ministry functions under the auspices of the greater St. Vincent de Paul Society in Seattle. Today, our conference has grown to become one of the largest in King County with 20 members volunteering to provide emergency assistance for essential needs such as rent, utilities, food, clothing, and much more. We are advocates for our neighbors to meet basic needs and achieve stability and self-sufficiency.
To access our services, assistance is requested by contacting our main line at 206-767-6449 (Seattle). If the address of the caller is in the Covington/Kent/Maple Valley area, the call is entered into the St. John the Baptist database which our volunteers check daily. Calls are then returned by these volunteers to get more information and determine the level of assistance needed.
We partner with agencies in the local community to provide adequate resources for further assistance.
Get Involved
Our ministry is always looking for volunteers to support our mission. Our current demand for volunteering is in the area of returning phone calls, delivery of goods, restocking the pantry, grant writing, and assistance with holiday activities.
The ministry team meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7 PM to debrief the ministry and schedule upcoming events.
We are always happy to take monetary donations to help our neighbors in need with rent and utilities as well as to sustain our activities, such as stocking the food pantry (including hygiene items and cleaning supplies), buying holiday meals, supporting the Christmas Giving Tree, and buying gently used furniture. Our biggest expense is helping with a portion of our neighbors’ rent and/or utilities.
