In the early days of the church, just about anyone could distribute Holy Communion. A sick person could ask a friend to bring communion to them. By the Middle Ages, the ministry was restricted to ordained clergy. But the Second Vatican Council opened up the ministry of distributing holy Communion to appointed laypeople. These laypeople are considered Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. (Ordinary ministers are those who are ordained clergy.)
We are always looking for more Eucharistic Ministers. This ministry is opened to any confirmed Catholic person (including those with manageable disabilities), who has a love for the Eucharist and a heart for service. Eucharistic Ministers are role models on how to participate fully and actively in the Mass. There are no special talents needed as long as you are able to let your joy shine through in the way you distribute holy Communion.
A ministry once born of practical necessity is now an expression of the variety of ministries here at St. John the Baptist. It is an opportunity for laypeople to show the community’s respect for the real presence of Christ and its joy in Holy Communion. If the Spirit is calling you to serve in this ministry, please contact Pat Defiesta for more information.
