DESCRIPTION:Each year the CCS Appeal for the Poor informs parishioners about the work of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services (CCS/CHS). CCS/CHS are our Catholic Charities in Western Washington. Every year CCS/CHS serves\, on average\, 100\,000 poor and vulnerable people in Western Washington through more than 170 programs. This collection is used to support programs and services in our local area\, and $0.92 of every dollar goes directly to serving those in need.

DESCRIPTION:Our annual drive to collect funds to provide hundreds of families with Thanksgiving meals continues. Through our partnership with Hilltop Red Apple\, we are once again able to provide an entire Thanksgiving meal to a family of 4-6. \nThese meals are distributed to families through Catholic Community Services\, Children’s Home Society\, Kent School District (including our neighbors at Covington Elementary)\, Kent Youth & Family Services\, Joint Base Lewis-McChord\, and St. Vincent de Paul. \nEach meal comes with a whole turkey\, 5lb bag of potatoes\, bread rolls\, canned yams\, cranberry sauce\, canned vegetable\, a box of stuffing\, a packet of gravy\, and a pumpkin pie. \nEnvelopes are available in the office and narthex. SUMMARY:World Mission Day
DESCRIPTION:Mission Sunday is celebrated the world over. Pope Francis is inviting the entire Church to support priests\, religious and lay leaders around the world as they bring the Gospel to those most in need. Please keep the pope’s missions in your prayers. The Archdiocese of Seattle takes up a special collection this weekend to support these efforts. In 1926\, Pope Piux XI instituted World Mission Sunday for the whole Church with the first worldwide World Mission Sunday collection taking place in October 1927. Pope Francis’ message for World Mission Sunday this year reflects on the theme: “You shall be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8). He reminds us that the Church is missionary in nature and that we are called at Baptism to share in this mission together. The Holy Father exclaims\, “Would that all of us in the Church were what we already are by virtue of baptism: prophets\, witnesses\, missionaries of the Lord\, by the power of the Holy Spirit\, to the ends of the earth!” On World Mission Sunday\, we join our Holy Father in supporting his missions. As we pray and respond here at home\, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish and school throughout the world. Together\, through our prayers and financial support\, we bring the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions. In a world where so much divides us\, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as missionaries by our Baptism\, as it offers each one of us an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1\,100 mission dioceses. This day is set aside to offer uninterrupted time to work on your own craft while growing in fellowship with others. All are welcome and do not need to be a member of St. John the Baptist to join. DESCRIPTION:October 8th & 9th \nBefore/After Masses in Narthex \nIn celebration of Respect Life Month\, the St. John the Baptist PREPARES* ministry is holding a diaper drive the weekend of October 8/9.\nPREPARES will be collecting the following items to help support moms and families in need:\n· Diapers (sizes 3\,4\,5\, and 6)\n· Baby wipes\n· NEW clothes\, babies’ size 6 months thru kids’ size 7/8 (onesies\, shirts\, pants\, dresses\, socks\, etc.)\n· lotion/shampoo/bath items for both moms and babies\nDonated items can be placed in the PREPARES crib located in the church Narthex. \n*PREPARES is a pregnancy and support ministry launched by the Washington State Catholic bishops with the promise of care from pregnancy to the child’s fifth birthday to mothers and fathers – no matter their beliefs. The PREPARES program celebrates the gift of life and makes sure that no child – born or unborn – is ever abandoned or alone. Thank you for respecting life by caring for vulnerable moms\, babies and families!
