SUMMARY:Flores de Mayo
DESCRIPTION:Flores De Mayo is a Filipino religious-historical-cultural tradition which was introduced by the Spanish friars in 1800’s. It is one of the most popular Catholic festivals in the Philippines. It is a Spanish term that means “Flowers of May.” This celebration has been engraved in the hearts and minds of the Filipino Catholics. This event has also become a thanksgiving and celebration by farmers because of the rains brought about at this month. This is a timely event since flowers bloom and crops grow during the month of May. The community would gather in Churches to pray the Rosary and offer flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the Eucharist\, more flowers are usually offered during the Presentation of Gifts. \nThe highlight of the Flores De Mayo is the “Santacruzan.” This term is derived from two Spanish words “Santa” and “Cruz\,” which is translated as Holy Cross. Santacruzan is a grand procession that re-enacts the finding of Holy Cross in 321 A.D. by St. Helena (Reyna Elena) who is the mother of Constantine the Great (Constantino). Constantine was the first Christian Emperor in Rome. During the procession\, the community sings songs of praise to the Blessed Virgin Mary on their way to the Church. Coincidentally\, the month of May is the celebration of Mother’s Day. It is but fitting and meaningful to be able to celebrate Mother’s Day and Flores de Mayo to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary\, the mother of Jesus. \nHere at St. John the Baptist Catholic Community\, The Filipino-American Association is appreciative to celebrate this Filipino Catholic tradition to the community. We believe that this is an essential element of our faith and worship. It is also a path towards accepting and understanding various cultures. \nMay 14\, 2023\nHoly Rosary 10:45am\nProcession 11:15am\nMass 11:30am\nReception to follow after Mass
