The Heartbeat of the Church
Active Participation and Leadership
Pope Francis has consistently emphasized that young people are not just the future of the Church but also its present. In his apostolic exhortation Christus Vivit (2019), he says:
“Young people are meant to dream great things, to seek vast horizons, to aim higher, to take on the world, to accept challenges and offer the best of themselves to the building of something better.”
The Church encourages young people to take on active roles in ministry, leadership, and evangelization, recognizing their unique perspectives and energy.
Witnesses to Faith in the World
The Church views young people as witnesses of faith in their everyday lives, calling them to bring the message of the Gospel into schools, workplaces, and social spaces.
“Young people, with their enthusiasm and energy, are called to be witnesses of faith, hope, and love in the Church and in society,” says Christus Vivit.
Builders of a More Just World
The Church sees young people as key contributors to addressing social injustices, poverty, and inequality. Pope Francis frequently encourages young people to engage in the mission of social justice and care for creation. He calls young people to be the generation that builds a world that is more just and sustainable:
“Dear young people, do not be afraid to make decisive choices in life. Have faith; the Lord will not abandon you!” (World Youth Day, 2013).
Listening to and Accompanying Young People
The Synod on Youth (2018) highlighted the Church’s need to listen to young people, accompanying them in their journey. The Church seeks to understand their struggles and dreams, aiming to create spaces where young people feel heard and valued.
Vocation and Discernment
The Church encourages young people to consider their vocation—whether in marriage, religious life, or service to the world—through a process of discernment. This is seen as central to discovering their place in God’s plan.
Hope and Renewal
The Church believes that young people bring renewal and hope to the Church. Their questions, energy, and desire for authenticity challenge the Church to grow and adapt.
“Young people, do not be afraid to be saints of the new millennium!” – St. John Paul II (World Youth Day, 2000).
“Dear young people, do not bury your talents, the gifts that God has given you! Do not be afraid to dream of great things!”
– Pope Francis
